Here’s a clip from a recent episode of @thestroll_podcast featuring my client, Jake, where he talks about his transition from Division 1 athlete to his career in business and finance.

A former catcher, he originally planned to train on his own similar to the way he did before college. But after years of competing and pushing his body, his current focus shifted to something bigger: longevity.

“I want to be a beast but feel as good as I can when I’m 90.” Two things that don’t always go hand in hand.

So we got to work.

Jake trains hard and consistently. We stay locked in on his short-term goals without losing sight of the long game.

Our focus is on building his movement capacity—under load and without any—and progressing those over time.

It’s cool to see a podcast like this open with a real convo about personal health, especially from someone in a demanding, unrelated field.

Not being in a team sport environment, the contacts I have with those I work with are less frequent, especially for someone like Jake, who is rather independent. So when I see the way he applies what we work on into his daily life—it means a lot.

Awesome of Jake to prioritize his health the way he does and how into his training he gets. Grateful he shared this clip with me and gave the green light to share part of his story.

A few progressions for introducing yielding strategies for a client.

I coach them to catch the force they are stepping into. The goal is to land softly with a slight hold at the bottom position, disbursing the absorption of forces through the body.

Utilizing a level of intensity that they can manage is key. Too much force = too much stiffness required.

This client came in with high levels of muscular tension that they are having a difficult time finding relief from. In this case it is not just one specific muscle, rather groupings that lean towards global tension.

At times, the client finds it difficult for the tension to “let go” once it worsens.

It’s all about influencing tissue behavior via force management rather stretching our way out of it.

@pyl_dickle came to us with a meet approaching and discomfort during the catch portion of his lifts, stating they did not feel as stable or pain-free as they should.

Fast forward to his meet—he absolutely crushed it, setting a new clean-and-jerk PR!

The best part – his consistent dedication to integrating our work into his routine and staying on top of his symptoms and progressions. It’s truly rewarding to see the direct results of his hard work and commitment.

We identified strategies that were limiting access to overhead positions and causing a forward bias of the shoulder/torso on that side. We focused on implementing left-sided posterior expansion strategies into his pre-lift routine, along with complementary manual techniques, all while he continued with his full training schedule.

A huge shoutout to him for sharing his meet results.
